Covid-19: Foster Youth Dorm Move-In Update
Thank you to all our donors and volunteers! Sept 2020 was our 4th year helping Foster Youth move into their UCLA dorm rooms with all the essentials they need to start college.
This year was tough as due to UCLA's sensible rules about limiting large gatherings we were not able to convene our usual large group of volunteers to help students move in, unpack and make their beds. Thanks to you, we were able to fundraise and provide basic needs with Target gift cards.
This year we were delighted to join forces with Ready To Succeed LA. RTS provides intensive mentoring, internships and ongoing support to foster youth throughout their college careers. Their success is impressive — 94% graduate college and 92% find full time jobs within 6 months of graduation.
Students are doing classes primarily online and many are housing & food insecure. Campus jobs have shut down suddenly severely lowering cash in student pockets. Vulnerable students have aged out of foster care and may not have a safe place to go when they graduate. In-person internships and jobs prospects are dwindling.
